SAN LORENZO, a bit of history and biography

San Lorenzo (Laurentius in Latin) was one of the seven deacons of Rome.

Born in Huesca in Tarraconensis Hispania. When Pope Sixtus was appointed in the year 257, Lawrence was ordained a deacon, and responsible for managing the assets of the Church and care of the poor. For this work, is considered one of the first archivists and treasurers of the Church, and is the patron of librarians.
Among the treasures of the Church entrusted to Lorenzo said that was the Holy Grail, and managed to send it to Huesca, along with a letter and inventory, which was hidden for centuries.

During the persecution of Christians under the rule of Emperor Valerian I in 258, many priests and bishops were put to death. Pope Sixtus II was one of the first victims, was crucified on 6 August. A letter of St. Ambrose of Milan says Sixto Lorenzo met on his way to crucifixion, and asked, "Where are you, dear father, without your son?" Where you hurry, holy father, without your deacon ? never mounted the altar of sacrifice without your servant, and now want to do it without me, "what the Pope said:" In three days you will follow me. "
After the death of the Pope, the prefect of Rome ordered Lawrence to turn over the wealth of the Church. Lawrence asked for three days to collect them, but distributed as many property-poor. On the third day, appeared before the prefect, and introduced him to the poor, the disabled, the blind and the needy, and said that these were the true treasures of the Church.
Lorenzo was burned alive on a grill, summer camp near Rome, on 10 August, the day that celebrates his birthday.

Lorenzo was buried on the Via Tiburtina in the Catacomb of Ciriaca, by Hippolytus and Justin, a priest. It is said that Constantine the Great had built a small chapel in honor of the martyr, who became a stopping point on the routes of pilgrimage to the tombs of the Roman martyrs in the seventh century. Pope Damasus I rebuilt the church, today known as the Basilica di San Lorenzo Fuori le Mura, while the Basilica di San Lorenzo in Panisperna stands on the site of his martyrdom. The grid used in the martyrdom was saved by Pope Paschal II in the church of San Lorenzo in Lucina.
